The Festive Forties

Free Family Event

Saturday 7th December – 10.30am to 4pm

Join us at the Northern Ireland War Memorial for Festive Fun with wartime games and toys. Learn how people celebrated Christmas under the restraints of rationing and try your hand in our lucky dip or have a go at cracking a secret Christmas message.

  • Play with wartime games and toys
  • Listen to well-loved Christmas songs and singalong
  • Sample our ration recipe Christmas cake – made with dried eggs

The Northern Ireland War Memorial is continuing to open on the first Saturday of every month from 12pm – 4pm throughout 2020.

Visit the Northern Ireland War Memorial to learn about Air Raid Precautions, Rationing, the Belfast Blitz and the build-up of US Forces in Northern Ireland. Listen to 1940’s music and play with wartime games and toys. Dress up in real wartime uniforms and helmets and take part in craft activities suitable for all ages.

Like many museums in Northern Ireland, NIWM has been working to become a Dementia Friendly Museum with support from Northern Ireland Museums Council and Alzheimers Society.

We offer various workshops which highlight objects from our collection and are engaging and informative for all. Every workshop is different as they are tailored to the needs and interests of a group, but they can include reminiscence, object handling, craft activities and singing.

We’re pleased to announce that we will be offering regular drop-in sing-along Fridays from 1.30pm to 2.30pm throughout 2020 on the selected dates listed below:
