The Northern Ireland War Memorial closed to the public on Monday 16th March 2020 until further notice. This decision was taken in the interest of staff, visitors and volunteers as the COVID-19 outbreak continues.

As a result, we have POSTPONED our Sing For Victory events that where due to take place on:

  • Friday 3rd April
  • Friday 1st May

We hope to reschedule these events for later in the year.

Like many museums in Northern Ireland, NIWM has been working to become a Dementia Friendly Museum with support from Northern Ireland Museums Council and Alzheimers Society.

We offer various workshops which highlight objects from our collection and are engaging and informative for all. Every workshop is different as they are tailored to the needs and interests of a group, but they can include reminiscence, object handling, craft activities and singing.

We’re pleased to announce that we will be offering regular sing-along Fridays from 1.30pm to 2.30pm throughout 2020 on the selected dates listed below:

  • Friday 3rd April
  • Friday 1st May
  • Friday 4th September
  • Friday 2nd October
  • Friday 6th November
  • Friday 4th December

Visit the Northern Ireland War Memorial to learn about Air Raid Precautions, Rationing, the Belfast Blitz and the build-up of US Forces in Northern Ireland. Listen to 1940’s music and play with wartime games and toys. Dress up in real wartime uniforms and helmets and take part in craft activities suitable for all ages.

Victory Party at the Museum

Friday 8th May 2020

10.30am – 4.30pm 

Join us for a family fun day at the museum with wartime entertainment and food reflecting the 1940s.

This will be an intergenerational event with learning activities for all ages.

Dress up in 1940s uniforms and have a souvenir photograph taken using green-screen technology. Take part in various craft activities, suitable for all ages to enjoy.

A Piper will play Battle’s O’er at 3pm.

Noel Thompson and Kerri Quinn will host a fantastic evening of wartime entertainment to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day with Swingabella, Ballroom Blitz Formation Dance Team, live band and fascinating stories from the museum’s collection.

Study of objects from the museum with Hannah Ferguson   

At 2.30pm on Saturday 16th May, artist Hannah Ferguson will take over our Facebook Live to create a study of objects from the museum.

Join Hannah as she creates a colourful piece of art in 30 minutes, focusing on composition, colour and texture. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to lift a paintbrush or a pencil and draw a selection of museum worthy objects from your  home.

We will also be launching a drawing competition for kids. The winner will receive a years worth of confectionery, based on Second World War rations of 2 oz. per week (6 lb. 8 oz.)
