Blitz Survivors by John Sherlock
Did you know that NIWM holds a contemporary art collection?
The half-life size bronze sculpture, Blitz Survivors by John Sherlock is on permanent display in the museum. It depicts a mother guiding her daughter through Belfast after it had been devastated in the Easter Tuesday Raid in April 1941. The woman is wearing the dress of a mill worker while the child is wearing a tea dress and clutching her teddy bear. A copy of the Northern Whig lies amongst the rubble on the cobbled street claiming that 200 people were feared dead. In truth, approximately 700 people lost their lives in what was the largest loss of life for a single raid on a British city outside of London.
Visit the museum to discover other hidden details of the sculpture and the other artworks on display that help tell the story of how NI was affected by the Second World War.
