Founded shortly after the end of the Second World War, the Northern Ireland War Memorial was intended to be a living memorial to the fallen in the First and Second World War. After almost twenty years of planning and fundraising, the War Memorial building on Waring Street, Belfast was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother on 29 October 1963.

Since then, the organisation has gone through some major changes and developments; surviving the difficult years of the Northern Irish Troubles, shifting its focus to become a Home Front Museum, and then relocating to Talbot Street to become an accredited museum in 2013.

About the lecturer:

Michael Burns is the Research Officer at the Northern Ireland War Memorial, managing the ongoing 'The War and Me' oral history project which captures local memories of the Second World War. From County Down, Michael graduated with a 1st Class Honors in History in 2017 before achieving his MA in History (Public) in 2018, both from Queen's University Belfast.
