Hugh lost his life when a bomb exploded on Royal Avenue as he and his Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) crew were making their way to the LMS Station on the Shore Road.

His colleague George was also killed in this incident.

Hugh is buried in Belfast City Cemetery.

He is pictured (third from the right) with the rest of his AFS crew.
