John lost his life during the first Luftwaffe raid on Belfast when he and other workers mistook a parachute mine for a German parachutist. Seven men in total were killed when the mine exploded at Harland & Wolff’s Alexandra Works.

He was the son of James Kyle and he is buried in Dundonald Cemetery.
