Whats On

Look North - Belfast Blitz Talk

During the Second World War, Belfast was an important industrial and military centre for the war effort; comprising shipyards, docks, munitions factories, linen mills, and barracks. Despite the scale of industry, the city was among the worst defended in the United Kingdom as a result of public and political complacency. Its geography offered a false sense of security, with many believing it to be at the extreme range of enemy bombers travelling from European airfields.

This talk, delivered by Mark Wigton, Outreach Officer at the Northern Ireland War Memorial Museum, will explore the devastating result of this apathetic approach to civil defence. With a particular focus on north Belfast, it will delve into firsthand experiences of local residents who survived the Luftwaffe air raids, despite living in the worst-hit areas of the city. Please join us for this free talk in Redeemer Central Church to learn about four nights in 1941 that would change the face of Belfast forever.

The talk will take place on Saturday 28 February 2026 from 1pm-2pm at Redeemer Central, 101 Donegall Street, BT1 2FJ.
