James was declared dead 'in consequence of war operations' at an inquest held at Belfast City Hall on 23 July 1941.

He was killed when a parachute mine struck the spire of Trinity St Church during the Easter Tuesday Raid.

His parents Hans and Ellen, and sisters Elizabeth, Hannah and Mary were among 36 others that were killed in this incident.
