Matilda was presumed dead as a ‘consequence of war operations’ by an inquest held at Belfast City Hall on 26 June 1941.

She lost her life when a shelter on Thorndyke Street was destroyed by a bomb. At least 18 people were killed in this incident including her husband Thomas and sister Mary Ann Crotty.

She has no known grave.
