William died when a shelter on Thorndyke Street was destroyed by a bomb during the Easter Tuesday Raid. At least 18 people were killed in this incident including his father-in-law, Hammie McClements, mother-in-law, Agnes McClements and brother-in-law, Hamilton McClements.

William had been asked by his wife, Irene McClements to visit her parents on the way home from work, he stopped with them for tea and joined them in the shelter when the air raid began. He is buried in Dundonald Cemetery.
